Why Printing Changed Everything
Reproduction cost is civilization's underrated parameter.
Drop the cost of reproducing a unit of knowledge by 100x, and every layer above the reproduction layer reorganizes. This happened with Babylonian clay tablets (vs. oral tradition), papyrus (vs. clay), parchment (vs. papyrus, in a few respects), paper from China to Baghdad to Europe (vs. parchment), Gutenberg's movable type in 1450 (vs. manuscript copying), and the internet in the 1990s (vs. print). Every one of those step-changes opened a new center somewhere and broke an old one elsewhere.
Cuneiform on clay made cities legible to themselves. The administrative apparatus of every Mesopotamian state runs on the fact that grain receipts, legal contracts, and tax records can be stored and retrieved. Without this layer, no city above ~10,000 people. Above ~10,000 people, no labor specialization. Without labor specialization, no civilization in the technical sense.
Paper, transmitted from China to Baghdad in the 8th century and to Europe via Andalusia and Italy in the 12th, lowers the cost of bureaucracy and scholarship by another order of magnitude. The Caliphate's House of Wisdom is on paper; the medieval university is on paper; eventually the modern state is on paper.
Gutenberg (1450) reduces book-production cost by perhaps 1,000x in 50 years. The consequence is the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, the printed legal code, the newspaper, modern public opinion, and eventually the constitutional state. Eisenstein's two-volume The Printing Press as an Agent of Change (1979) is, alongside McLuhan's earlier work, the standard treatment; the basic claim is that you cannot get a Newton without a printed Euclid, you cannot get a Luther without a printed Bible, and you cannot get a Locke without a printed Hobbes to argue against.
The internet does the same trick at zero marginal cost. The 1995–2010 broadband-and-search era is the printing press of digital information; the 2022–onward generative-AI era is the typewriter of meaningful new content. The pattern predicts that the cities that own the next reproduction layer will be the next centers. Right now those cities are still Silicon Valley, Beijing, and a handful of others. The question of 2030 is whether the reproduction layer remains spatial at all.
A second-order observation: each reproduction-cost collapse breaks the institutional model that depended on the old cost. Manuscript-economy monasteries lost intellectual centrality when print arrived. Print-economy newspapers lost economic centrality when web arrived. Web-economy publishers are losing centrality now to generative-AI workflows that produce equivalent text at zero marginal cost. The institutions that survive are the ones that find a layer above what just collapsed. The institutions that don't, become museums.
