Huang founded NVIDIA in 1993 to make consumer graphics cards. Thirty years later his company is by market capitalization the largest in the world, the supplier of the silicon that every frontier AI model trains on, and an effective geopolitical actor whose chip-export decisions are negotiated with U.S. and Chinese state apparatuses simultaneously. The 2006 decision to build CUDA — a general-purpose programming layer on top of graphics silicon — is in retrospect the single most consequential corporate strategic move of the early 21st century.
